2008 Student Leadership Conference At A Glance

On Saturday, February 2 almost 300 students attended the 2008 Clifton M. Jones Student Leadership Conference. This year's theme was "Leader ‘08.” Faculty and staff members from two-dozen departments nominated more than 800 students who were given the opportunity to register for the conference online.

Students began their day with a free breakfast, followed by a welcome from August J. Washington, Chief of The University of Tennessee Police Department. Washington’s inspiring and energetic welcome left the students excited and looking forward to the day’s activities.

Students at Breakout SessionAfter Mr. Washington’s speech, students went to the first two of three breakout sessions that were held throughout the day. In the breakout sessions students learned about a variety of different leadership topics from "Preparing for tomorrow" to "Graduation... Now What?" Over thirty faculty, staff, students, and members of the University community presented twenty different programs throughout the day. Some of the conference favorites were "Etiquette Jeopardy 2008," "Leveraging your leadership experience as a law school applicant" and "Leading Ladies."

The lunch keynote speaker was Hallerin Hilton Hill. Hill’s speech focused on the “7-up’s” of Leadership. Hill’s speech was energetic and motivational for the students in attendance. His sense of humor kept the students attentive and engaged throughout the keynote. Hill also served as the closing speaker. He used this opportunity at the end of the conference to tell students that they are a B.R.A.N.D. and that they should represent themselves as such. The students came away from the conference energized and ready to go back to their organizations and personal lives with fresh, new innovative ideas and perspectives.
