On Saturday, January 20 almost 300 students attended the 2007 Clifton M. Jones Student Leadership Conference. This year's theme was "So You Think You Can Lead." Faculty and staff members from two-dozen departments nominated more than 800 students who were given the opportunity to register for the conference online.
Students began their day with a free breakfast, followed by a welcome from Anton Reece, Director of Student Activities. Mr. Reece’s inspiring and energetic welcome left the students excited and looking forward to the day’s activities.
After Mr. Reece’s speech, students went to the first two of three breakout sessions that were held throughout the day. In the breakout sessions students learned about a variety of different leadership topics from servant leadership to fundraising to career development. Over fifty faculty, staff, students, and members of the University community presented thirty different programs throughout the day. Some of the conference favorites were True Colors, Party Like a Pro-fessional, and First Job Survival Guide.
The lunch keynote speaker was Dr. Will Keim. Dr. Keim's speech focused on the personal sense of responsibility for serving a greater social good. Dr. Keim’s speech was energetic and motivational for the students in attendance. His great sense of humor kept the students laughing throughout the keynote. Dr. Keim was also the closing speaker. He used this opportunity at the end of the conference to put everything in perspective and to tie everything together. The students came away from the conference energized and ready to go back to their organizations with fresh, new ideas and perspectives.
