Josef Beal

Hometown: Murfreesboro, TN
Classification/Major: Sophomore, Journalism & Electronic Media, French

How did you decide on your major?

  • I am a huge Francophile, and I have always liked the French language, so French just seemed right. As a child I loved the glossy pages of magazines, cologne and perfume samples, and supermodels.

What is your favorite extracurricular experience?

  • My favorite extracurricular experience is the University of Tennessee High School Model United Nations Conference. The UT Model UN team has been putting this on for eight years. It gives high school students the opportunity to simulate what the United Nations does. It also helps students learn more about diplomacy and cultural differences that cannot always be defined as black or white. Overall, it is an amazing weekend of global thinking.

What surprised you most about coming to college?

  • I was surprised to find so many people that share common experiences with me. I thought it was going to be a very impersonal place; however, that just was not the case. These are not just experiences like having a Doberman pinscher as a child. Others have had some of the same life-changing experiences I have had. Most people have also been very willing to talk about these experiences. This surprised me a ton.
