What is the most important piece of advice you would give new students?
- As a new student at UT, it is important to realize the need to take the initiative to get involved and put yourself out there. In order to get the most of your UT experience, you have to take steps as an individual. Taking the time to introduce yourself to your professor on the first day of class or applying for a campus organization are just a few examples of how you can assert yourself as an independent and responsible student.
What is your most memorable UT experience so far?
- In the fall of 2005 I was a freshman living in Humes Hall. One Saturday the Vols were playing football at LSU. We were not expected to win and at half-time we were down 24-3. The Vols rallied for the win in over-time, however, and beat the LSU Tigers. Still new to campus, I remember what a thrilling experience it was to hear students down the hall cheer simultaneously each time the Vols scored. When the game ended, all of campus seemed to cheer. We rushed into the Presidential Courtyard where hundreds of students gathered to celebrate, singing Rocky Top and shouting UT cheers. Everyone in the courtyard eventually ran to Neyland Stadium where we celebrated outside. That night, I was overwhelmed with pride as I witnessed first had the enthusiasm, spirit, and loyalty of my fellow Tennessee Volunteers.
What surprised you most about coming to college?
- Although I knew before I came to UT that college life had a lot to offer, I had no idea the amazing opportunities I would have and all of the people I would get to meet. My time at UT has provided me with the privilege to try new things, meet all kinds of people, and explore possibilities for my future. As an out-of-state student, my first year was crucial in finding my niche by making friends and getting involved. I had an extremely positive experience with my randomly assigned roommate, met a wide range of friends through my classes, and got involved with organizations that were important to me. A few of these included the Chancellor's Honors Program and Campus Crusade for Christ. Since my freshman year I have had the opportunity to spend a summer in Sweden, help new freshmen adjust to UT by working as a Resident Assistant, and continue to build friendships that I will value for the rest of my life. My time at UT has given me a passion to pursue a career at a university and make an impact in students’ lives. I have been pleasantly surprised at how quickly UT has become home to me.
